Jito is the dominant liquid-staking and MEV (maximal extractable value) protocol on Solana. Normally, staking your SOL locks it up, but Jito's JitoSOL token lets you stake while keeping a liquid asset you can still use across DeFi — and on top of normal staking rewards, holders also earn a share of MEV profits. MEV is the extra value validators can capture from how transactions are ordered; Jito built the most widely used validator software on Solana to capture this fairly and redistribute it rather than letting it leak to insiders.
This combination has made JitoSOL one of the most popular ways to stake on Solana and turned Jito into critical network infrastructure. The JTO token governs the protocol, including decisions about fees and how MEV tips are routed back to stakers and the network. Jito also runs initiatives like restaking, expanding what its security and staking layer can support.
In short, it is both a way to earn more on your staked SOL and a key piece of plumbing that keeps Solana's transaction market healthy.
